MPD arrest Terron Clayborn, accused in hit-and-run crash that killed DPW worker

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police tell FOX6 News they have arrested Terron Clayborn on Wednesday morning, Feb. 20.
Clayborn is the man charged in connection with the death of Milwaukee Department of Public Works employee Bryan Rodriguez near 17th and Vine on Friday, Feb. 8. Clayborn faces one count of hit-and-run involving death and one count of knowingly operating while suspended, causing death.
Police say Clayborn was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Rodriguez was filling potholes near 17th and Vine last Friday morning when a car slammed into him and into the back of a DPW truck. The complaint indicates Clayborn and a woman who was a passenger in the car, both fled the scene after the wreck. Rodriguez was rushed to a hospital — and later died from his injuries. The female passenger was also taken into custody after the wreck.
According to the criminal complaint, one witness told police she was driving northbound on N. 17th St. when she noticed a DPW truck with yellow flashing lights ahead. She told police she moved over to pass the truck — but “noticed that the vehicle behind her was not merging over.” The woman told police “as she was passing the city truck, she heard screeching of tires coming from the vehicle to her right and saw this vehicle hit the city truck.” The witness identified Clayborn and the female passenger from a photo array.
The complaint says the female passenger spoke in-depth with police about what happened. She indicated Clayborn was her boyfriend — and was driving when the crash occurred. The woman said Clayborn was driving north on N. 17th St. and “she was looking at her phone, when she suddenly felt the car swerve and saw a yellow city truck stopped in the road directly in front of them.” The woman indicated “she shouted to the defendant to try to get him to turn but that it was too late.” They crashed into Rodriguez and the DPW truck.
Clayborn is not yet scheduled to appear in court.

NEW DETAILS: Man accused in businessman’s shooting death had just gotten out of prison

A man accused of killing a prominent businessman in a CVS parking lot had been released from prison four months before the deadly shooting, according to court documents.
Channel 2 Action News reported that DeMarvin Bennett, 24, was on probation when he shot 73-year-old Jack Hough outside of the CVS off Park Hill Drive in Gainesville.
Hough was sitting inside his parked car while his wife went into the CVS when Bennett allegedly tried to rob him around 7:45 p.m. Feb. 7. During a struggle, authorities say Bennett shot Hough in the chest. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he died.
According to Channel 2, Bennett had just gotten out of prison for charges related to an armed robbery. Bennett served seven years after Forest Park police said the then 16-year-old robbed another teenager at gunpoint.

According to court documents, Bennett is a known gang member and “hangs out with members of the Conley Road Crew Gang.”
Clayton County District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson told Channel 2 that Bennett was not prosecuted under Georgia’s Street Gang Act because there has to be proof that the crime was tied to a gang.
Investigators found forensic evidence outside the CVS that led them to Bennett days after Hough’s shooting death.
He is in the Hall County Jail without bond on malice murder and other charges.
"What is malice murder? Bennett asked a judge during his first court appearance appearance last Monday. “I have no clue of what that is.

Sheriff's office employee accused of biting, strangling the mother of his child

AVON PARK, Fla. — A Highlands County Sheriff's Office employee was arrested after being accused of biting, strangling, and hitting the mother of his child.
Deputies say Willie Lee English III, 29, punched and threatened his ex-girlfriend with a gun when she came to his home to talk about their child late Monday evening.
English, who works as a civilian support officer at the sheriff's office has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
The ex-girlfriend told deputies she went back to English's house to drop off the child Tuesday morning. He dragged her into his home and hit her multiple times, throwing her to the ground, biting her, and 'placing his hands around her throat,' according to deputies.
English would not allow her to leave after an attack that lasted for more than 10 minutes, deputies say.
Deputies arrested English following an investigation that stemmed from the ex-girlfriend coming forward. Deputies say she had visible injuries when they spoke to her.
“We take any allegations of domestic violence, no matter who is involved, very seriously,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “Mr. English has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.”
He was arrested around 4:18 p.m. Tuesday and faces charges for battery, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and aggravated assault. He has a bond set at $35,000 and is set to have his first court appearance on Feb. 20.
