Well-known Colorado disability rights
activist dies at 47
A Coloradan known for being a relentless advocate for disability rights
died on Sunday.
Carrie Ann Lucas was a nationally-recognized attorney who lived with a
severe neuromuscular disease. She grew up in Windsor, Colo. and had several
careers including being a teacher, ordained minister and legal assistant before
becoming an attorney.

She helped to lead battles against discrimination and in favor of better
care and access for people with disabilities.
According to her an obituary on her Facebook page, Lucas died following
an "arbitrary denial" by an insurance company, which led to various
health issues.
Lucas is survived by four children, her parents and two siblings.
She was 47.

Veteran civil rights activist to
speak in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (AP) — Veteran civil rights activist, journalist and author
Charles E. Cobb Jr. will be the featured speaker March 14 at the National
Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.
Cobb was a field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee during the 1960s civil rights struggle in the Mississippi Delta that
included the 1964 Freedom Summer movement. The movement was aimed at increasing
education opportunities and voting rights for black people in Mississippi.

He will discuss the impact of peaceful protests in a lecture drawn from
his book "This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil
Rights Movement Possible."
His appearance is part of the 2019 Freedom 55 lecture series marking the
Freedom Summer's 55th anniversary. Hundreds of student volunteers trained in
Oxford, Ohio, for their service in Mississippi.
