Little Gem on song for Autumn showdown

BY RAY THOMASThe Daily Telegraph
If beating Winx is racing’s version of mission impossible, trying to overcome The Autumn Sun might be the next most difficult task in the sport. But that won’t stop trainer Kris Lees from trying when he sends Gem Song into a clash with The Autumn Sun in the Group 2 $400,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.“Gem Song has been a little underrated,’’ Lees said. “He’s a promising young horse on the rise. But I have a huge respect for The Autumn Sun, he could not have been more impressive last preparation.’’The Autumn Sun won the Golden Rose-Caulfield Guineas Group 1 double in spectacular style last spring and is rated by TAB Fixed Odds price assessors at $1.50 favourite to make a winning return in the Hobartville Stakes. Gem Song is next in betting at $6.Lees is hoping Gem Song’s race fitness will give his colt the chance to mix it with The Autumn Sun on Saturday. Gem Song resumed with a tough win in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes over 1200m at Warwick Farm earlier this month, the colt’s fourth win from six starts and his first at stakes level.“I only gave Gem Song the one trial going into his first-up run because we were running out of time and I wanted to get that race into him,’’ Lees said. “He has certainly improved and come on since Warwick Farm.“By having that run under his belt I thought that would hold him in good stead for a race like this but I’m under no illusions, it is going to be hard to beat The Autumn Sun.’’Gem Song leads a strong Lees stable presence at the Rosehill meeting as the trainer looks to build on an outstanding 2018-19 season so far where he has trained 132 winners to be fifth on the national premiership rankings.Lees has seven starters at Rosehill including comeback mare Serene Miss in the Golden Slipper Hospitality Handicap (1100m) and a trio of Australian Bloodstock-owned stayers, Big Duke, Singing and Red Cardinal in the Listed $140,000 Parramatta Cup (1900m). The talented Serene Miss, winner of six of her eight starts including the Provincial Championships Final at Randwick last April, is resuming from a long spell after having bone chips removed from a knee.“Because she has had a long time off whether she may need a run or two to switch her on I don’t know but she is in good order,’’ Lees said. The champion Newcastle trainer prepared In Her Time to win the Group 1 Lightning Stakes last week and is chasing another major with stablemates Le Romain and Brave Smash in the $500,000 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.“Le Romain will run well in the Futurity and hopefully that will get him into the All Star Mile where I’m confident he will be very competitive,’’ Lees said. “I’m not sure which we will go with Brave Smash after the Futurity, we may keep him for the shorter races.’’

Artistic Director: Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Inspiration: After the return of its founder, Luciano Benetton who took back control of his company at the end of 2017, the French designer presented his first men's and women's show for Benetton for next autumn/winter named “Rainbow Machine”, opening Milan Fashion Week. A way to highlight the essential colours of the brand and a tribute to the innovative industrial production at Benetton, with knitting machines and its artisans in action at the centre of the podium as the decoration for the show with various colourful bobbins. Collection: The primary colours of a rainbow was the starting point for this recognisable new identity by Castelbajac with puffa jackets, denim and wool on multi-coloured boots. The letters making up the word Benetton are muddled up along with stripes and diamond shapes printed on clothes. The green label of the brand is also printed in different dimensions. Knit is omnipresent in the collection through dresses, enveloping jumpers and tights. Denim is loose and appears on shirts and jackets. There are multiple propositions of outerwear such as quilted sweaters, short parkas and jackets and of course the duffle coat. Energy, sportswear, comfort and a pop universe mixed with Mickey and Snoopy livens up some items. Note: Must-have accessories such as big scarves, hats, ushankas, boots and sunglasses. + the duo sat on the front row, the photographer Oliviero Toscani and the founder Luciano Benetton. Strong autumn for rail traffic at the Port of Gothenburg

During 2018, 398,000 TEUs were transported to or from the port by rail. The figures were strongest during the final quarter of the year when rail-borne container freight increased by 27 per cent. “The fact that long-distance freight transport is recovering at a higher rate is a clear indication of the growing confidence in the Container Terminal throughout the country,” said Claes Sundmark, Vice President, Container, Ro-Ro and Rail at Gothenburg Port Authority.
During the past year, rail-borne container volumes to and from the Port of Gothenburg rose by 13 per cent. Volume growth intensified during the year and was strongest during the final quarter with an increase of 27 per cent.
The increase can be compared with the downturn in volumes during the industrial dispute at the Container Terminal in 2017. Since then they have recovered steadily – short-distance road volumes initially, followed by long-distance rail volumes.
“Short-distance freight recovered very quickly whilst long-distance rail volumes took slightly longer. The fact that rail volumes are now returning at an increasing rate is a clear indication of the growing confidence in the Container Terminal throughout the country,” said Claes Sundmark, Vice President, Container, Ro-Ro and Rail at Gothenburg Port Authority.

High pressure at transloading terminalsMuch of the long-distance freight is made up of Swedish basic industry products such as steel, paper and timber, which are generally transported by rail from inland locations or the east coast to the Port of Gothenburg for onward transport by sea to export markets on the continent.
The freight often needs to be switched to containers at one of the three transloading terminals at the Port of Gothenburg, all of which are located close to the Container Terminal. Transloading of sawn timber between rail and ship at the Port of Gothenburg is largely handled by the operator Mimab. Transloading of this nature rose by almost 20 per cent in 2018 compared with the previous year, and even at Mimab volumes were highest during the fourth quarter.
“We had an excellent year and a particularly good autumn, when we were working at full capacity. The trend has continued into 2019 with consistently high volumes. And there are no signs of a slow-down. On the contrary, the upturn looks set to continue,” said Michael Bergman, Mimab Chief Executive.
Double track Port Line improves reliabilityThe Port Line, the dedicated freight track that runs directly into the port, is being overhauled and converted into a double-track system. Several sections have already been completed, including the new double-track Marieholm Bridge, which opened back in 2016. Phase 2 was recently completed, bringing rail traffic all the way into the Container Terminal. Phase 3 of conversion of the Port Line to a double-track system is due to commence in 2019.
New Combi Terminal expands port rail offeringJust over a year ago, the Arken Combi Terminal at the Port of Gothenburg replaced the now defunct Combi Terminal in central Gothenburg. At Arken it is mainly road trailers that switch between rail, road and ro-ro vessel.
The move to a hypermodern terminal at a location close the port has resulted in more effective transport, increased volumes, and an overall rise in rail capacity at the Port. More than 60,000 units were handled at the Combi Terminal last year, which can be added to the almost 400,000 units that passed through the Container Terminal.Source: Port of Gothenburg.
