Is your Valentine's Day bogan or classy? From roses to lingerie - the dos and don'ts of February 14

While you might think that giving your loved one white roses and treating them to a set menu meal out is the height of class this Valentine's Day, in fact you could be making yourself look bogan.
For while you might not realise it, every little romantic thing you do - from your choice of date to your gift - is a social signifier.
The Good Manners Company etiquette expert Anna Musson revealed to FEMAIL the Valentine's items that make you look classless, and the things that make you appear wealthier.
So what are they?

On the other hand, eating out in a set menu Valentine's Day meal - complete with streamers and love hearts - can be seen as a bit cliche (stock image)

For Anna, the most important thing with a Valentine's Day gift is that it 'reflects the value you place on the other person'.
'You can blow the budget, but only do it if it's something you know they'll appreciate,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
On the classy list are gifts of lingerie, hand-picked flowers, jewellery or a wallet for men.
When it comes to gifts, she said that matching tattoos are one of the least classy gifts you can buy (stock image)
'On the less classy side are gimmicky gifts like edible underwear or matching tattoos,' Anna said.
She also warned against white roses - saying you should instead buy red or yellow.
'Red roses are the colour of love, white is for death, yellow is for friendship,' Anna explained.
'So choose your colour wisely.'
You should also consider buying a Valentine's Day gift for your date's mother if they live at home.
'A little bouquet will always go down a treat,' Anna said.
Never forget a card unless you want to come across as bogan, and make it hand-written for extra romance points.
'A hand-written note is often as romantic as flowers delivered to the workplace,' Anna said.
Bogan gifts
* Edible underwear
* Matching tattoos
* White roses
* Vouchers
* Forgetting card
Classy gifts
* Hand-picked flowers
* Jewellery
* Lingerie
* Gift for the date's mother
* Hand-written card
Gimmicky dates (stock image) should be avoided in favour of romantic experiences, like a pottery class or skydiving
DATES
When it comes to dates, it can be hard to know where to start.
Whether you fancy a set menu feast at a fancy restaurant or an 'experience' date of hot air ballooning or sailing, is what you want to do going to make you look the classy or bogan?
'Lots of people see eating out as a bit cliche,' Anna said.
'So it's worth carefully gauging exactly what they're into before you both arrive at a restaurant with red streamers and roses all over the floor.'
Lingerie is a good gift, unless it is gimmicky or edible, Anna said (stock image) - she also recommends you have your gift sent ahead of you to the restaurant for the ultimate in class
'Consider having a gift sent ahead to the restaurant so it's at the table on arrival if you want to look really classy,' Anna said.
She also recommended you 'pick your date up from their home and go to the restaurant together' for an added thought.
'Whatever you do, don't mention money, the price of the meal or the inflated prices for Valentine's Day,' Anna said.
This can end up looking tacky - and takes the romance out of the entire situation.
She recommended 'fun' dates, like pottery-making classes or skydiving - to do something outside of the norm.
'But if you eat out, set menus are often unavoidable,' she said.
'So just be prepared for that.'
White roses (stock image) will not hit the high notes because they are associated with death - instead think about red for love or yellow for friendship
Classy dates
* Eating in or eating out somewhere thoughtful
* Pick your date up from their home
* Have a gift sent to the restaurant ahead of time
* Book a fun experience like pottery
* Paying secretly without drawing attention to the bill
Bogan dates
* Eating out in a set menu, streamer location if that's not your date's thing
* Mentioning inflated Valentine's Day prices
* Eating out somewhere overly flashy
* Arrange anything too gimmicky
* Proposing on Valentine's Day instead of another well-thought date
THE BILL
Anna (pictured) said whoever extended the invitation of the date should pay - and they should do it secretly to avoid awkwardness
The bill is the crux of any date. Who should pay, or should you go Dutch and split it?
'Whoever extended the invitation should pick up the tab,' Anna said - and that's a rule.
'It's a nice touch to excuse yourself from the table to settle the account discreetly.'
She said this is especially good because it avoids any potential 'awkward black folder arriving on the table and the potential discussion about who should settle up'.
Proposing is also a no go on February 14:
'It's always nice to propose on a day free of cliches, so if you want to propose on a significant day, choose a birthday or the most popular day to propose, Christmas Eve,' she said.
'However, don't be too quick to dismiss Valentine's Day as overrated,' she said.
'One of the worst things you can do is assume your date isn't in to it, just because you aren't.'
