Netflix announces The Haunting Season 2 renewal, The Haunting of Bly Manor

After scaring the bejesus out of Netflix subscribers with THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, the high-profile streamer has confirmed that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s terrifying TV series has received a Season 2 renewal. What’s more is that when The Haunting returns, it will do so as an anthology, with the second chapter featuring a new story with all new characters.

After speaking with Mike Flanagan via Twitter, our own Alex Maidy has confirmed that the next installment of The Haunting series will be titled THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR.

The arrangement for a follow-up season to one of the network’s hottest hits comes as part of a multi-year overall television deal with the duo, which will find Macy executive producing as well as overseeing the the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Flanagan will again executive produce in addition to serving as director of the series.

Netflix dropped a video teaser for the upcoming season alongside the announcement, which urges fans to listen closely if they want a hint as to where the show is headed. After a valiant attempt at discerning the whispered words featured in the tease, I’ve come to discover that the woman’s voice warns, “The terrace and the whole place, the lawn and the garden beyond it, all I could see of the park, were empty with a great emptiness.” Of course, this is a line from Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, which would lend credence to the idea of Flanagan basing the upcoming season on the classic movie version, THE INNOCENTS.

“Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are masterful at creating authentically frightening stories that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, but unable to look away,” said Cindy Holland, VP, Original Content at Netflix. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with them on The Haunting series and future projects to come.”

'Haunting of Hill House': Netflix shares title, teaser for Season 2

Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The Haunting of Hill House is getting another season on Netflix.

The streaming company shared a title and teaser for the season Thursday on Twitter after renewing the series for Season 2.

The Haunting of Hill House will continue as an anthology series featuring a new cast and characters. The new season is titled The Haunting of Bly Manor and is based on The Turn of the Screw and other works by author Henry James.

"You guessed it. The HAUNTING OF BLY MAJOR, a new chapter in the Haunting series based on the works on Henry James, is coming in 2020," Netflix tweeted.

Netflix hinted at the new story in a teaser featuring a woman's voice earlier in the day.

"The terrace and the whole place, the lawn and the garden beyond it -- all I could see of the park -- were empty with a great emptiness," the voice says.

The Hollywood Reporter said Netflix renewed The Haunting of Hill House after signing a new deal with series creator Mike Flanagan and his producing partner, Trevor Macy. Sources said the deal will last four or five years and is worth a low eight figures.

"We're excited to continue our partnership with them on The Haunting series and future projects to come."

The Haunting of Hill House is based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name. The season stars Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas, and was well-received by critics and audiences following its debut in October.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has secured the rights to Gina Prince-Bythewood’s female-fronted action film, The Old Guard which is based off the comic book series by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández.

As previously announced, the feature stars Charlize Theron and If Beale Street Could Talk breakout KiKi Layne. Rucka is writing the screenplay.

The Old Guard tells the story of a small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.

Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger are producing along with Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah; and Marc Evans. Stan Wlodkowski is EP.

Theron has a track record for taking on strong female ass-kicker roles, i.e. Mad Max: Fury Road, The Fate of the Furious and Atomic Blonde. Next up for her is the SXSW world premiere comedy Long Shot from Lionsgate/Summit opposite Seth Rogen. The movie opens nationwide on May 3. She’ll also play Megyn Kelly in Jay Roach’s untitled Roger Ailes drama about the women who rose up against the problematic cable network news boss.

Layne’s upcoming project slate includes Native Son, which debuted at Sundance last month and was picked up by HBO Films, and Focus Features’ Captive State on March 15.

Prince-Bythewood’s other feature directorial credits include The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond The Lights. She is also working on the film adaptation of An Untamed State for Fox Searchlight, which she co-wrote with celebrated author Roxane Gay, and will direct. Most recently, Prince-Bythewood directed the pilot for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger.
